Parole is the release of a prisoner when they have served the non-parole period set by the sentencing Court. A prisoner who is granted parole may serve the rest of their sentence in the community on conditional release. While on parole the parolee is supervised and must comply with the conditions of their parole.
Prisoners do not have a right to be released on parole; the Parole Board may decide that a prisoner is not to be granted parole and should serve the whole of their sentence in prison.
Some prisoners may decide they do not wish to be considered for parole and will advise the Parole Board of their decision. These prisoners are able to change their mind and apply for parole.
